I’d like to introduce you all to my current favourite YouTube Channel, BEAUTY NEWS. It is run by two lovely ladies, Kat, from Kitsch Snitch, and Hailey, from Just Buy the Makeup. I’m currently very addicted to the videos produced by this sophisticated duo (with help from Simon the intern of course) and couldn’t help but share them with you all! Beauty News’ main content is two weekly ‘news’ type videos that discuss all the new Beauty releases and drama from around the world. They also make sure to cover Australian Beauty releases too since the girls are both based in Melbourne, yew. The most popular content on the channel is by far their The Makeup Breakup series which is so satisfying (they destroy beautiful makeup 😮) and often informative to watch.
Things you need to know:
- They REALLY love makeup
- Their channel is bomb AF
- They are so entertainingly honest
- They legit don’t give a sh*t
- Both are totally obsessed with beauty
- Beauty News’ discusses beauty related drama but does not create drama (thankfully)
- You can’t fool them with buzz words and hype
- They swear
- You will need to STAY IN YOUR LANE at all times
- There’s a fun Beauty News Facebook group where we discuss all things new in beauty!
I was lucky enough to score an exclusive interview with Kat and Hailey, so I was so keen to share their answers with you guys! Let the interview begin!
Who are your beauty role models?
Kat – I had to think for a while about this. I am just an enthusiastic makeup consumer so I respect makeup artists and influencers, but I don’t see any as being a role model to me personally. My role model would have to be Marlena from Makeup Geek because she started with a makeup channel as a hobby and worked her arse off to then create a well respected brand that has ethics that I admire – they strike a balance between good quality but affordable, they don’t release products that aren’t extensively tested, they cater for all skin colours and they have great customer service. If I was going to further my career in the makeup industry it would be with starting a brand and I see Marlena as a great role model for that.
Hailey – Lizzie Sharp, Pat McGrath & Ve Neill are all artists that inspire me however I wouldn’t consider them my role models by definition, I don’t really look to anyone in the beauty industry to emulate, I’m a bit of a ‘carve my own path’ kind of person and am drawn to using makeup as a way to express creativity, the three artists I mentioned always light the artistic spark in me.
Kat – I am a red wine drinker and lately have been drinking pinot noir but I haven’t found my favourite wine yet. I had tried a few great wines but some how magically forget the type and brand by the next morning.
Hailey – I’m a moscato drinker and typically reach for something by Brown Brothers, I’m also not opposed to a nice Top-Shelf vodka for special occasions.
Most favourite and least favourite things about YouTube?
Kat – Let’s start with the positive haha. My favourite thing by far is working for myself and also working closely with one of my best friends. We have a lot of fun together (even in the harder times) and working for ourselves means I am motivated to work hard (which is great because I hate being bored)… and I get to sleep in. My least favourite thing about YouTube is the frustrating comments. Not the hater/troll comments because you can easily think “ok, that person is unnecessarily angry or is having a bad day” and you can distance yourself from it, but the frustrating comments are the ones where people don’t watch the video and start saying “what’s the point of this” “why am I watching this” “you’re doing everything wrong” or the people who mansplane things to us and treat us like we are morons, yet if they actually watched the video they would have all their questions answered. One time we actually had someone leave a massive essay with dot points about how we should have done the video, to which I replied “if you actually watched the video you would realise that that’s exactly what we did”. I just get frustrated that people can’t be bothered paying attention or watching a video, yet they can leave us an essay calling us stupid.
Hailey – Everything Kat said! Something I’d like to add to the positives of YouTube is the occasional person recognising us in public and taking a few moments from their day to say hello, meeting our viewers in person is an awesome experience!
What was the first makeup item you were ever given?
Kat – I don’t know if it counts as makeup but I can remember my first beauty items to be Lip Smackers haha.
Hailey – I’m the same as Kat in this situation, my first ‘makeup’ item was a Lip Smakers balm, it was the popular item at the time and at the tender age of 7, probably the only appropriate beauty item my mum felt I could own. After that it was mascara and a black eyeliner, I would have been 12, going on 13 and was only allowed to have them because I pressured mum in to buying them for me with the ‘everyone else at school is allowed’ argument.
Can you remember the first beauty youtube channel you subscribed to?
Kat – The first couple that come to mind were Pixiwoo and Kandee Johnson. They were definitely the two that I remember discovering maybe around 2010 and then binge watched all of their videos. From then I got into some of the British YouTubers like Pixi2woo (now Tanya Burr), Essie Button (now Estee Lalonde), Zoella and Sprinkle Of Glitter.
Hailey – Kandee Johnson was my first, followed by many that Kat mentioned, they were so popular at the time it was hard to not be subscribed!
Most BS beauty release so far this year?
Kat – We are very critical with most makeup because all makeup has it’s pros and cons, but most just comes down to personal preference. One that sticks out as being just utter BS is the upcoming Too Faced White Chocolate Bar Palette which is releasing in their holiday collection and contains 14 shades of eyeshadow, 9 of which are coming directly from the White Chocolate Chip Palette that they released a while ago, is still available and received bad reviews. There is nothing good about that, it is just lazy and unnecessary and I think it shows very little respect for their customers.
Hailey – Silicone sponges. I abhor them and think they are a major money grab. I also agree with Kat that Too Faced is losing their marbles with their palette releases and I can no longer trust them when they release a new palette. My final item is a more recent one, the Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture palette, while it’s usable it has some serious flaws and I can’t get my head around how it was approved for release by the brand.
Now is the time for YOU to grab a wine, open up YouTube and binge some Beauty News videos to experience the magic for yourself.
Please leave some love for the girls in the comments, let me know what you like best about the Beauty News videos!
