Experiment: I’m Trying Affiliate Links for the Money Dollarz

affiliate links

I’ve been binging on Problogger podcasts lately and he raves on and on about affiliate links. I’ve tried them in the past and have made exactly $0.00, ka-ching! Hence, why I stopped bothering to use them at all. Problogger did make some excellent points for  affiliate links, and how even just earning a couple dollars a month off your blog can make you more motivated to get posting. I’m such a ‘gold star collecting’ kind of person, so I’m going to try this to help my blogging mindset!

I decided to turn this into a little experiment, and report back in several months. I know other bloggers will be keen to see if affiliate links actually earn anything, especially for us Australians (our options are limited).

The affiliate programs I’ve chosen to use are:

  • Amazon Affiliates
  • Commission Factory
  • Rakuten Link Share (maybe)

I was also encourage to try affiliate links after seeing my girls Kat and Hailey on Beauty News starting to use them. They also had a big explanation in one of their videos explaining themselves, before using them, so I thought I’d do the same here. Note I have gone back to some older posts and changed the links to affiliate links, but I have made a note in the post so you know. I’m not going to try and trick y’all! Y’all too smart anyways, am I right? Not trying to be a sell out, just trying to pay my rent and still be transparent with you guys.

I was also considering making a blog post titled “How I Spend My Blog Post Ad Money.” That idea didn’t have much traction though since I couldn’t buy anything with my solid $0.13 per month LOL.

Do you use affiliate links? I have no idea what I’m doing so please help a girl out and leave your thoughts in the comments.

Good luck with your affiliate links Mel. I use them but I don’t make much money from them. I recently looked at a lot of Blog income reports on Pinterest and none of them seemed to be making that much money from affiliate links (nowhere near what Darren from Problogger reports earning anyway) despite some of them having massive page view numbers.

Hey Ingrid. Thanks so much for your thoughts! I’ll see how you go. It probs works better for Darren because his main blog is about cameras and they’re worth much more than cosmetics. Thanks for sharing your experience

I have been using affiliate links for a couple of years now and I think in total I have made $17! Keeping in mind I can’t actually get the money until I reach their $100 minimum. I think I like doing it to see what people are actually buying based on my recommendations but I definitely won’t be quitting my day job 🙂 x

I’ve just recently started to use affiliate links too. I have signed up to Rakuten and mainly use those guys, however I do have a Comission Factory account (but don’t use). Other affiliate programs are ones where companies have approached me personally. I have a page dedicated to coupon codes for my readers and also post affiliate links there (which I disclose). So far, no success but seems to be the general trend anyway haha. I’ll be keen to hear how your journey goes!

I have a few affiliate links, I’m yet to make money from anything though. I am tempted to look into some of these now though, can’t wait to hear how you go!

Good Luck Mel! I haven bothered with affiliate links because everything I’ve heard is of the consensus that it’s not really worth it, so I can’t be stuffed with it really.

I’ve been using affiliate links for a while – not so much now that I’ve got less time but I do try and throw up a sale or or promo every now and then as well as the ads on my actual blog. I estimate I’ve made a modest couple of hunge over the years but I know some bloggers who have a very engaged spendy community that make a lot! It doesn’t cost you anything but effort so it’s worth having a crack. Just pick brands your readers are likely to buy from and go from there!

Thanks for the advice Beth!! Nice to hear you’ve actually made something

Best of luck with it. I hope you make some extra coin for your hard work. I have decided to start using affiliate links recently too so I’m in the same boat as you. Hopefully it works!

Thanks Louise. Hope it works out for both of us!

Sadly I have no advice to offer as I’ve zero experience with any of this blog-income thingy – my expertise lies in spending lol! Oh but I do so hope you make a squillion dollars Mel, or at the very least cover your expenses xxx

How did you end up going with the affiliate links? I use them but not that often and I have literally earned just about nothing from them, so I’d love to hear how they ended up going for you and if they were beneficial, what did you do? haha
